n take their recent hot streak on the road when they shoot for a sixth consecutive win Monday night in Montreal.Brasilia, Brazil - Costa Rica attemp
WINNIPEG - Rookie John Klingberg wasnt making a big deal about his four-point game— even if it was the first of his NHL career. Rather, the Dallas Stars blue-liner, who finished with two goals and two assists, pointed out his defensive performance as a highlight in a 5-2 victory Saturday over the Winnipeg Jets.Im learning new stuff almost every game, and I think today was a good game, said Klingberg, who now has nine goals and 24 points in 35 contests.Obviously, four points is a good night, but I think I played pretty good defensively, too, so Im happy about the game today. The Stars (23-19-7) scored four times on the power play, with Klingberg, Patrick Eaves, Shawn Horcoff and Jason Spezza producing with the man advantage. Tyler Seguin tacked on three assists.Captain Andrew Ladd tied goal-leader Bryan Little with his 18th of the season and added an assist for Winnipeg (26-17-8), which extended its losing streak to three games. Toby Enstrom had the Jets other goal.I dont think it was the best start and, obviously, taking too many penalties, Ladd said. Theyve got some guys up front that can make you pay and that was the difference.I thought we were doing some good things, but its tough when youre building momentum and you end up in the box.Kari Lehtonen made 38 saves for the Stars, who were coming off a 6-3 win over Ottawa.Michael Hutchinson stopped 27 shots in his second straight start for Winnipeg, but his effort wasnt helped with the Stars getting eight power plays.I dont think we were over the edge, but look at the penalties. Two were undisciplined penalties, Winnipeg coach Paul Maurice said.Ladd said its a balancing act.Its something that we need to get better at, he said. At times, you try to wind yourself up as much as possible emotionally, trying to finish your check and (be) involved in the game.Sometimes, weve been taking it too far, so its something where we have to get better at walking that line and being more disciplined. The Jets, who had two power plays, had won their previous three home games.Dallas coach Lindy Ruff said his players held their own in the battles.Obviously, they were trying to play real physical and they were taking a few penalties, Ruff said. The only way you can stop the physical play is by putting the puck in the back of the net.For us, we had the opportunities. If you dont take those opportunities, then it keeps coming.Dallas opened the scoring with Eaves fifth goal of the season at 5:13— 15 seconds after Jets defenceman Ben Chiarot went off for interference.Winnipeg had a 3-on-1 rush late in the period, but Adam Lowrys shot hit a Dallas player. The Stars outshot the Jets 11-10 in the first. When youre able to make that kind of save, that makes me feel good and its easier to get going from there, Lehtonen said. I think there was some bounces that went my way, too. You need that to have a game like that. The Jets put five shots at Lehtonen in the first three minutes of the second, but he withstood the barrage and Ruff called a timeout.Winnipeg continued to swarm in the Dallas end midway through the period for more than a minute and the fans erupted when Ladds low shot went by a screened Lehtonen at 10:14 to make it 1-1.With Jets defenceman Zach Bogosian in the penalty box for slashing, Horcoff scored his seventh goal of the season when he deflected a shot by Trevor Daley from the high slot at 14:21.On Dallass third power play of the period, this time with Jets defenceman Dustin Byfuglien in the box for delay of game, Spezza scored his ninth of the season for a 3-1 lead at 18:47.Winnipeg outshot Dallas 18-13 in the middle frame. At 4:31 of the third period, Klingberg scored his eighth of the season when his shot from the point got past Hutchinson, who had Chiarot and Colton Sceviour banging at each other in front of the net.The players paired up for some fighting eight minutes into the period and Dallas came away with a two-man advantage, setting the stage for Klingbergs second goal of the game at 8:40.Hes played well for us, Ruff said of the young Swede. Hes a young D thats got some good skill. You know, sometimes the puck goes in the net for you. The wrist shot from the point found a hole somehow. For a young D, he took a beating out there a few times tonight, but kept playing.Stars captain Jamie Benn assisted on the goal, giving him four goals and five assists in his past six games.Enstrom made it 5-2 when a rebound from Blake Wheelers wrap-around attempt bounced out to him and he beat Lehtonen at 12:46.Both teams made changes to their defensive pairings, with the most notable being Byfuglien going back with former sidekick Enstrom instead of rookie Chiarot, who teamed up with Bogosian. Defenceman Jacob Trouba, who was playing his 100th career NHL game, was paired up with Stuart. The Jets head out for a two-game road trip, starting Monday in Calgary and the following night against Vancouver. Listen to the game live starting at 4pm et/1pm pt on TSN 1050, TSN 690, TSN 1200, and TEAM 1410. Costa Rica reached the last eight for the first time after topping Greece in penalty kicks in the round of 16, while the Dutch are attempting to reach back-to-back World Cup semifinals for the first time since 1974 and 1978. The Ticos were viewed as outsiders in Group D, which included Italy, England and Uruguay, but after claiming seven points to win that group, Jorge Luis Pintos team came up against a stubborn Greek side making its first-ever knockout-round appearance. Bryan Ruiz scored early in the second half to put Costa Rica in front, but after defender Oscar Duarte received a second yellow card in the 66th minute, Pintos team spent much of the remainder of the match defending. They almost got over the line, but Sokratis Papastathopoulos scored for Greece in stoppage time, forcing the match into extra time and ultimately penalty kicks. But Costa Rica survived the ordeal to win 5-3 in the shootout, showing the resilience the team has exhibited throughout the tournament. "It was a dramatic match, a very difficult one," Pinto said after the game with Greece. "There were moments when we dominated the match but there were other moments when they did but we were strong and we came through." If Costa Rica is going to continue its journey, the team is going to have to be even stronger against the favored Dutch, who have won all four of their games at this World Cup. The team trailed 1-0 against Mexico in the round of 16 entering the final five minutes, but Wesley Sneijder fired home the equalizer a few minutes from time before Arjen Robben drew a foul inside the penalty area, allowing Klaas-Jan Huntelaar to fire home the winning goal from the spot. Louis van Gaals side has made a habit of coming back in Brazil as the team haas given up the first goal in three of its four games so far, only to rally for the win each time.dddddddddddd "I think we are on a mission together, and when you come to a World Cup its not to enjoy the weather and enjoy the beach in Rio," said Robben, who has tallied three goals and an assist so far. "Youre here to win matches and to go as far as possible. I dont think the expectations were that high before the tournament and, as a result, we can be very proud of where we are." The Dutch found themselves in a tough group with Spain, Chile and Australia, but after winning all three games to sit atop the group, the Oranje have a great chance at making another deep run. Things have come together nicely for the Dutch as the team ended up with a pair of teams from CONCACAF in its first two knockout-round games, making Van Gaals men favorites to reach the last four. But Robben isnt looking too far past the Ticos, especially since the team has already toppled favored sides like Italy and Uruguay. "I think theyre a very strong team. We have to stay focused," Robben told FIFA.com. "Costa Rica have a very good team, they have already proved that in their group, which was very tough, with Italy, England and Uruguay in there. Theyve been really impressive and well have to prepare very well if were going to beat them." One player who wont be available to Van Gaal the rest of the tournament is midfielder Nigel de Jong, who was forced off the field against Mexico after nine minutes because of a groin injury. Costa Rica will be a bit shorthanded in defense after Duartes red card, while Roy Miller is unlikely to be fit in time to face the Dutch because of a foot injury. Pintos team will once again embrace the role of underdogs, and although they have made history already in Brazil, dont expect the Ticos to be content. "We respect the Netherlands, just as we respect all our rivals, but the story goes on and were hungry for more," Pinto said.
