BOSTON - With just under 40 seconds to go, the game tied at 105, Kyle Lowry poked the ball away from Celtics rookie Marcus Smart, igniting the signature play of the evening. I just sat on the crossover, said the Raptors point guard. If he got by me he wouldve gotten a layup but I anticipated it well and I know that DeMar [DeRozan] is always going to trail me. So I was just hoping he was hurrying up. Leading the fast break, Lowry flipped the ball back to DeRozan - following behind him as predicted - who finished it off with the go-ahead, one-handed slam. Thats our thing, DeRozan boasted. Whenever hes on the fast break he knows Im trailing and Im finding an opening gap where I can catch it and go through and try to get a foul or something. So thats just how we play. He knew I was coming. The play of the game was the steal [Lowry] had at the end, Dwane Casey said. As the whistle blew - DeRozan would go to the line to cap off a three-point play - Lowry turned to face the Garden crowd, arms spread at waist level, and let out a roar. At the moment, he had that look in his eyes. He had that same look, or variations of it, from the second quarter on. Most of the NBA is familiar with it by now and it doesnt usually bode well for whomever is on the other side. Hes got that angry face, said Patrick Patterson. Thats what he always looks like. There was no way Lowry was letting his team lose that game. Yesterday they said I wasnt aggressive enough and with us missing [Jonas Valanciunas] and [Amir Johnson] I had to be more aggressive tonight, said Lowry after scoring 35 points - his highest as a Raptor - on just 17 shots in Torontos comeback 110-107 road win over the Boston Celtics Wednesday. The Raptors were without their starting frontcourt. Valanciunas sat out nursing a couple injuries - namely a sore hand - after taking a beating in a game the night before. Johnson stayed back in Toronto, missing his third straight contest with an ankle injury. For Lowry and the rest of Wednesdays starters it was the same story on a different night. Plagued by slow starts to begin the season, Toronto allowed the host Celtics to shoot a whopping 79 per cent in a 35-point first quarter. It got ugly, and fast. Boston hit its first eight shots, going nearly half the period without a miss. They made 11 of their first 12 until, before you knew it, the Raptors were stuck in a 16-point hole and Lowry was having deja vu. Our starting unit, we havent been playing up to par, he had said after a similarly crushing slow start soured Tuesday nights win over the Thunder. I think… I know we need to play a lot better. Its one of them things weve got to fix internally. Midway through the second quarter, Lowry and company finally delivered on that promise. With that same starting unit on the floor, the Raptors closed the opening half on a 20-7 run putting a dent in their well-earned deficit. They decided to compete, said Casey. Thats the thing. You take the whip out in the derby and just keep cracking the whip, cracking the whip, cracking the whip. We cant be that way. It shouldnt have to come from me to crack the whip at every turn to get us going. But they decided to get going. To be a playoff or championship calibre team we shouldnt have to say giddy up. As the half ended, with momentum starting to turn in favour of the visitors, the ball was in Lowrys hands once again. Unhappy with a foul he committed on the other end, sending Rajon Rondo to the line, he drove into the body of the Celtics All-Star point guard, took a step back and drained the buzzer-beating jumper. Without breaking stride or watching the ball splash through the mesh, Lowry walked straight to the locker room. No roar that time. Just business. Rajon, hes got good hands so I had to get my step back and get freed up, he said. It was kind of a momentum push for us. He just got the two free throws so I wanted to make up for the dumb foul I did. Lowry was pissed off. Competition, as it usually does, fuelled him. A battle with Rondo, who finished with a triple-double of 13 points, 10 rebounds and 15 assists. A dog fight with Smart, who he went head-to-head with a couple occasions in the pre-season. But more than anything else he was ticked off at himself and at his team. They had let themselves down again. Toronto has allowed 30 or more points in the first quarter of each of its last three games. Opponents are shooting 71 per cent over that span. I call us drama queens, honestly, DeRozan said of the slow starts. Were like a suspenseful movie. Weve got to get out of that habit. I dont know. Were just a group of guys that love a challenge for some reason. I dont know why. Despite their 4-1 start to the campaign - Torontos finest in 10 years - weve yet to see the Raptors at their best for anything even close to a 48-minute interval. Theyve yet to face elite competition, sure, but theyre also coming off a stretch of four games in five nights without their two most important defenders and interior players for the second half of it. We cant be satisfied with that, Casey said. Im happy we won but were trying to build something here. Weve got to develop a playing personality starting the game. Starting the game. We cant wait till we get punched in the mouth. [We have to] understand that teams are coming after our necks and respond accordingly. The good news, and its not insignificant, is that Lowry is already looking like the All-Star that the Raptors hoped he would be when they committed to him this summer. Prior to Wednesdays contest, the Raptors became the first team to record 10 or fewer turnovers in four straight games to open a season since the NBA began tracking the stat in 1970. They gave the ball away just seven times in Boston, forcing the Celtics into 28 turnovers. Lowry has been the catalyst, with the ball in his hands more than any other Raptor player. The point guard did not commit a turnover on Wednesday. Its the fourth time in five games hes gone without one. Hes committed just two in 171 minutes. Help is also on the way. Although the Raptors have decided to err on the side of caution in regards to Valanciunas and Johnson, Casey believes theres a reasonable chance one or both could be back in the lineup to face the Wizards at home on Friday. "Thats probably stats-wise one of the most impressive professional games Ive ever played," he said. "Its not something you go out there and try to do. You just go out there and play every down and what happens happens." The first quarter was a comedy of errors for the Bombers, who opened with a turnover as Will Ford bobbled a lateral from quarterback Max Hall on his first play of the game. Bighill, a linebacker, snatched it up in the scramble and took it 30 yards for the Lions first touchdown. One way or another, the Lions defence accounted for most of their points, with three touchdowns in the first half alone. "The defence putting up points like that, it doesnt come very often," said Bighill. That first was just one of seven turnovers for the Bombers (2-11), who had two touchdowns from Clarence Denmark and a field goal from Sandro DeAngelis. Bighill, Nick Moore, Dante Marsh, Cord Parks, Andrew Harris and quarterback Thomas DeMarco had touchdowns for the Lions (9-4). Paul McCallum added three field goals and a couple of singles. DeMarco said the big thing is locking up the playoff spot. "We played a tremendous game, offence, defence and special teams," said the backup, after just his second start and second win since replacing an injured Travis Lulay. "Were heading in the right direction and its just one more win to where we want to go." It was unpleasant all around for the Bombers and their fans, many of whom left early on a cool night with sporadic showers. Buck Pierce got the biggest cheer of the night when he took over from DeMarco in the third quarter. Winnipeg traded Pierce to B.C. at mid-season. Joey Elliott, cut by the Bombers as well before the season started, also saw a little action late in the game for the Lions. The Bombers poor play hasnt helped but a cool night and showers also left the stands emptier than they have been all season. Winnipegs defence was far more effective than the Bombers offence and defensive back Brandon Stewart was clearly frustrated. "We did everything that we could do. We gave them multiple chances on offence," he said. "Defensively we could do notthing but watch it.dddddddddddd Were on the sidelines. We cant run off the sidelines and go out and tackle people." Coach Tim Burke said the defence played hard. "They were getting banged up but they hung in there." But he had nothing good to say about his offence. "It was pathetic." The Bombers have maintained at least a veneer of optimism in the CFL East where they have maintained a mathematical chance of making the playoffs. But that too slipped Friday night. "You keep playing for something," said veteran offensive lineman Glenn January. "If the playoff picture is out of the question now youve got to play for your jobs, youve got to play for your paycheque, youve got to play for your family back home watching you, youve got to play for the name on the back of your jersey." Things looked up briefly in the first quarter for the Bombers after Hall executed a four-play 54-yard drive and connected with Denmark to tie it less than three minutes later. But a coverage gap let DeMarco cap his own short drive with a throw to a wide-open Moore, who strolled into the end zone. The Bombers werent done with first-quarter gaffes. Ford and Denmark were back to take the kick and basically just watched McCallums 80-yarder bounce between them for a single. Hall was intercepted in the second quarter on his own 28-yard line, which set up McCallums 34-yard field goal at 9:24 to make it 18-7. A little over five minutes later Hall was closing in on the B.C. goal line when he was intercepted again and Dante Marsh returned it 79 yards for another touchdown. Another single on a 50-yard punt from McCallum made it 26-7 and then Akeem Foster fumbled a pass from Hall and set up Parks 45-yard touchdown return. With about a minute left in the first half, though, Hall connected with Denmark again with a 35-yarder to make it 33-14. Jason Boltus came in for Hall in the second half and on his first play threw an interception that led to DeMarcos one-yard run for B.C.s second offensive touchdown. Harris made it 47-14 with a 16-yard run just before the third quarter ended. Boltus fumbled on a throw on his own 11-yard line to set up McCallums 12-yard field goal. DeAngelis kicked a 30-yard field goal with 5:49 left to make it 50-17 but McCallum added another three points for the Lions as well with about a minute and a half left. In fact, the Bruins blew a 3-1 series lead against Toronto last spring in the conference quarterfinals and needed to overcome a 4-1 third- period deficit in Game 7 just to get past the Maple Leafs. The Bruins also beat Montreal four games to three in 2011 en route to its first Stanley Cup title since 1972, but lost in seven the following season against Washington. "There werent any secrets in tonights game. Both teams played tight...dont think there was any surprise out there today," said Boston head coach Claude Julien. "Everybodys got to find a way to create more, and thats going to be the challenge in this series." While Datsyuk provided the late-game dramatics for Detroit, Lucic was the center of controversy for the Bruins. Late in the second period, Lucic speared Danny DeKeyser in the groin, whacking the Red Wings defenseman from behind with his stick. No penalty was called on the play but Lucic was fined $5,000 by the league on Saturday. Although Detroit had the NHLs fourth-fewest penalty minutes (725) during the 2013-14 regular season, all eyes will be on Lucic in Game 2 to see if the Red Wings try to retaliate for the dirty play. Lucic also was caught by cameras pulling a similar stunt against Montreals Alexei Emelin back in March, but Bostons power forward says its not going to become a habit. "Obviously, it was kind of the heat-of-the-moment thing when youre not thinking when you do something like that," Lucic told reporters after practice on Saturday. "Ive been in the league for seven years now and I think Ive only done that three times. I dont know why I did it, but it was the heat-of- the-moment things that unfortunately I did. I believe in playing within the rules and, for me, I definitely wont be heading down that road again." This series is the first playoff meeting between the Bruins and Red Wings since the 1957 Stanley Cup semifinals. The clubs, of course, spent decades playing in opposite conferences before Detroit moved to the East as part of the NHLs realignment plan for the 2013-14 season. Game 3 of this series is scheduled for Tuesday in Detroit. The Red Wings also will host Game 4 on Thursday.
