Graeme Souness has hailed Rangers manager Mark Warburton for the job he has done in helping the club gain promotion to the Scottish Premiership. The Englishman inherited a demoralised squad after Rangers promotion bid crumbled 12 months ago but he has quickly turned the clubs fortunes around and helped them clinch the Championship crown last week. The Gers won the Petrofac Training Cup on Sunday and head into this weekends William Hill Scottish Cup semi-final with Celtic on a high - a game you can watch live on Sky Sports 2 HD from 11.00am on Sunday. Souness is credited with revitalising Rangers when he took over as player/manager in 1986.The former Liverpool midfielder helped attract big-name signings from England such as Terry Butcher, Graham Roberts and Chris Woods, and laid the foundations for the nine successive titles they won from 1989.However, the landscape of Scottish football is much changed in the years since and Souness believes his challenge was much easier than the one which greeted Warburton when he arrived last summer. Rangers players celebrate beating Peterhead at Hampden Souness said: Hes had a far more difficult job than I had. There were so many things that worked in our favour at the time, such as the problems English football had.We could match any one of the English team for their spending power. English teams were banned from Europe, so we had lots of things going for us. That job was a lot easier for me that it was for Mark taking over at Rangers this time.I think he deserves a great deal of credit. I dont know the guy but I sat next to him at Wembley for the Norwich-Middlesbrough play-off game. I spent maybe 10 minutes talking to him but found him to be a very impressive, calm, nice human being. Hes done a great job. Celtic manager Ronny Deila Sundays clash with Celtic at Hampden marks Warburtons first taste of a Glasgow derby but he has been keen to play down the games significance in the build-up.When told Warburton referred to Sundays game as just another match, Souness said: Really? Well it certainly isnt. Its the biggest derby Ive been involved in.The Liverpool-Everton one is a friendly derby. The Galatasaray one with Fenerbahce is a big game but it still doesnt come near this one. Leigh Griffiths scores in Celtics previous meeting with Rangers last season Nothing prepared me for the passion and the enormity of this job. A lot of the enormity is in your own mind because you feed off the passion your supporters have for your football club. You absorb that and start to feel guilty when youve not done the best for them.So Mark must feel that. Hes been here long enough to realise what these two clubs mean to their supporters. Its greater here than anywhere else. And thats why its not just another derby.Celtic are currently eight points clear at the summit of the Scottish Premiership and on course to clinch their fifth successive title, but Souness predicts Rangers will give Ronny Deilas side a much closer examination than they managed in last years League Cup semi-final. Graeme Souness led Rangers to glory on and off the park Then a Gers team led by caretaker boss Kenny McDowall seemed relieved to escape Hampden after suffering just a 2-0 defeat.Celtic obviously start as the big favourites, Souness said at a press conference promoting Sundays semi-final.They play in the top league. The challenge for Rangers is to turn up and make a game of it. They didnt do that last year. Its the biggest derby Ive been involved in. The Liverpool-Everton one is a friendly derby. The Galatasaray one with Fenerbahce is a big game but it still doesnt come near this one. Graeme Souness Anything can happen in derbies but Celtic must start as the outstanding favourites. I want Rangers to do themselves justice.I would hope it would be closer this time. Rangers are better than they were last year. Are Celtic? Im not sure. Rangers certainly are but I dont think that means they are going to turn up and have an easy game.It will be difficult because Celtic are used to playing against better players every week, they are used to moving the ball quicker, having a quicker thought process. But its a derby game and Rangers have a big chance. This is not a foregone conclusion.Watch the Glasgow derby on Sky Sports 2 HD from 11am this Sunday.By purchasing a Sky Sports Day Pass for £6.99 or Sky Sports Week Pass for £10.99, you can enjoy access to all seven Sky Sports channels and watch on a TV with a NOW TV Box or on a range of devices. Does that surprise you? Goodell said. Weve all done a lot of soul-searching, beginning with yours truly. And we have taken action.Goodell brushed aside a question about whether there are conflict-of-interest problems with paying those who head up independent investigations, such as into the leagues handling of the Ray Rice case or the ongoing look at the New England Patriots use of deflated footballs in the AFC title game.We have had people who have had uncompromising integrity run those inquiries, Goodell said. Then, speaking directly to the reporter, he added: Somebody has to pay them ... unless youre volunteering, which I dont think you are.Rice is the former Baltimore Ravens running back who punched his now-wife in an elevator, drawing an initial suspension from Goodell of two games. Goodell changed that to an indefinite ban after video from inside the elevator was posted by TMZ. Rice later appealed, and an arbitrator reinstated him. That and other domestic violence cases led the league to design a new personal conduct policy, which was approved unanimously by owners but has been criticized by the players union.Weve made enormous progress, Goodell said Friday. Were in a good place. On the main topic of conversation heading into Super Bowl week — the deflated footballs used by the New England Patriots in the AFC championship game — Goodell said: Whether a competitive advantage was aactually gained or not is secondary in my mind to whether that rule was violated.dddddddddddd.A resolution will not come until after the Super Bowl.We dont know enough in this investigation to know who was responsible or whether there was even an infraction, Goodell said.Patriots owner Robert Kraft has said he expects the investigation to determine his team did nothing wrong — and he expects an apology from the NFL. Kraft did not attend Fridays news conference.Another issue that wont be resolved until after the seasons final game, Goodell said, is whether Seattle Seahawks running back Marshawn Lynch will be fined for refusing to answer any questions at required media sessions this week. The NFL docked Lynch $100,000 earlier this season for not talking to reporters.I understand it may not be on the top of his list, Goodell said, but everyone else is co-operating, everyone else is doing their part.On other topics, Goodell said:— Any clubs move to Los Angeles, without an NFL team for 20 years, would have to be approved by owners, and there have been no determinations of us going to Los Angeles, any particular team going to Los Angeles or going to any particular stadium. The St. Louis Rams, Oakland Raiders and San Diego Chargers have been viewed as the teams most likely to try to head to L.A. Goodell also noted that San Diego needs a new stadium, as does Buffalo.— The league will take a look at possibly expanding instant replay reviews to include whether a penalty was committed and consider rotating officiating crews during the regular season. Crews currently work together all season long.— Adding more playoff teams is also on the table, but there are concerns, including the risk of diluting our regular season and conflicting with college football in January.— The league is hiring a chief medical officer to oversee health-related policies.___Follow Howard Fendrich on Twitter at http://twitter.com/HowardFendrich___Online:AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org and AP NFL Twitter feed: http://twitter.com/AP_NFL ' ' '
